Why I Don't Play World of Warcraft

Not that any of you care, but I need to write this for me. Why am I not playing the greatest game ever invented? Me, who grew up with Frogger and Qbert on Atari, and everything on Nintendo? Me, who thought King's Bounty was God's gift to my DOS prompt? Me, who fell in love with Ocarina of Time and actually had a dream which helped me solve a puzzle I'd been working on for days? Why in the world would I not play a game that I knowingly would enjoy for hours and hours on end? I know some of you may think video games are dorky and a dumb waste of time. So is reading other people's blogs. So, you can't use that argument. Ha-ha. But, if you've grown up with games like I have, and especially enjoy RPGs, there's a 100% chance that you would love World of Warcraft. Just watch this teaser trailer and tell me you're not at least intrigued:

Yes, I know WoW has been around for years now. Which makes it even more amazing that I don't play. So the question remains, why don't I play World of Warcraft? Well, the reason I like to give is that I know I would become addicted to this game and would not be able to make myself stop. I have a hard time putting up Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, so there's no way I could limit my playing time for WoW. As evidence of what can happen, I offer up two videos. This first one is just sound of a kid fighting with his parents, who are trying to make him stop for the night. Scary.

Next is some kind of British news story on game addiction.

There is little doubt in my mind that I would become addicted to this game. I would probably never admit to that, but I'm sure it would happen. Those two kids would have nothing on me. So, it's easy to use that as an excuse for me and an explanation as to why I don't play. Another excuse is that there's no way my wife would agree to letting me play this game for more than 15 minutes a day. That may or may not be true, but I like to think it's true, so there's another reason I don't play. And the best excuse is because we don't have an internet connection at home. Actually, this is probably the only excuse. Dangit. I want to play. Lastly, WoW has come up with a great advertising campaign to promote their free 10-day trial. Thanks to Brian (who is on WoW hiatus, but has played in the past) for first pointing these out to me a while ago. Mr. T. is still the best one.

Not sure this one counts, it's from Toyota:

And, just for the heck of it, since no post about WOW would be complete without it: Leeeeeeroooooy Jenkins!

Maybe if the gameplay itself looked as good as the trailer for it, I would be intrigued. But having family who play it all the time, and watching over their shoulders while they play, it's the most boring game I've ever seen. The graphics suck. (Materials should look like they do in movies, and models should not have visible polygons.) And all you do is run. Then you run some more. The maps are huge, whoopteedoo. All the more reason for you to run. So you do. Fight that guy? Hmm, okay. Then you run some more.

Sorry, maybe I just don't get it, but I don't see what all the fuss is about. I'd rather do something in a game rather than just run around.

I haven't played it, maybe I should before I give it so much crap, but looking from the outside in, it looks straight-up boring.

Clearly you have no idea what you're talking about because you've never played it. This game is not addicting to watch, it's addicting to play, so if you've never played it, how can you claim to know anything about it?

Also, the graphics are absolutely amazing. Blizzard intentionally built the graphics engine to simulate "magic" qualities in the game by creating an element of cartoon-like modeling, which obviously would not look like a movie.

They saw every other game out there and said "we want to have a different look." That's a formula for success. Guess what? Sure enough, they succeeded. And if you've ever played ANY game out there, you will know there is a difference between in-game cinematics and actual gameplay.

Knocking WoW for the graphics and because it's not fun to watch is like knocking football because it doesn't look like baseball and because you don't get the NFL network. It just doesn't make any sense.

@ Art:

If you know you're going to get addicted to something before you do it, then I would say definitely don't do it. Don't let any of my WoW friends hear me say that.

Anonymous- That's interesting, because I've also watched people play and it still looks really fun to me. I guess I like running around. Anyways, it's probably a good thing that you're not interested. I'm sure there's better things to do with your time.

Brian- I can't believe you just told me "definitely don't" play WoW. Wow.

Jesse- "Move along...move along."

I used to play WoW but actually got really bored with it as soon as I hit level 30. I never made it past that on multiple characters. It just gets old so fast!

You're probably better off for not playing anyway. You start losing friends quick when you can't come up with anything to talk about but your last raid on Molten Core and how you just found this sweet piece of gear that lets you PWN NOOBS in Battlegrounds.....yeah I've had friends I've since avoided because every conversation turned into this endless story :)

Its true dont even start playing it, the game was great at first, however as time went on and it got comeercial it sucks. Alot of the classes are unbalanced, plus all the 13 year olds running around thinking they are uber elite players is horrible. Once you get pass the glamor and glitz of it all its gets pretty borring end game all you do is farm materials and raid ( which takes hours of time ) just so you can get Purple Epic items which make you top tier untill blizard decides that they want to release an expansion pack then once again its back to zero...........I dont know if I can wave someone off from this game I will. trust me stay as far away as you can.

OMG this is so true. In fact, World of Warcraft is pretty much like LIFE. Before you can actually enjoy the "fun" part of the game, your little fairy "character" has to do some MAJOR WORK. By work I mean, farming materials, looting gold, etc etc and all the endless achievements that you need to obtain in order to be labeled 1337.

I myself am a WoW addicit and have been for at least 2 years now. For everyone out there even considering giving this game a try - DO NOT. As I write this I am soeager to just cancel my account delete all my level 80s and just say !@#$ it and walk away.

well I have been addicted and have quit several times but now I can control everything so i play no longer than 2 hours a day
what I would say is don't give it to a person who gets addicted easily or has no will power

Hello,
I also loved Ocarina of Time, it's one of the best video games ever! It's also number 1 all time on different videogame review sites. Ok the graphics are dated, but the music and gameplay, puzzles and dungeons are so great nothing else have come near this perfect game.

About World of Warcraft, I have played it for some months and it's pretty good. Graphics and music are really good, but what I don't like about this game is; it's takes too much time, to get to some place it takes hours!, you do the same thing over and over again, collect X number of item X, kill X number of creature X, escort X to point Y. This is all you do, and eventually this will become really boring. Not like Zelda, where you have puzzles and quest you have to figure out! That's why I don't play warcraft anymore. And yes you can become really addicted to this game that's true.

I play wow and it's addicted. However the anonymous are absolutely right, it's straight out running and running and running and graphics suck so bad it takes time to get used to it (it's for the performance so bad). I fixed running issue by using speedhacks and teleport hacks, and i play in private server, so i have most of my time pure fun from pvp'ing with my friends. Still it sucks to level up the character, so i have only one.

I played WoW hardcore for about a year and a half. I am talking minimum of 8 hours every day, usually 12-16, oftentimes even "binge-WoW" where I would drink something with a lot of caffeine. I would make "5-man" or "10-man" teas and coffees, with 5x or 10x regular amounts. Never 25-man though :p
Occasionally I would even tap into some old ADD meds lying around, especially when levelling or an important raid.

Then over the course of a few months, I just got more bored with the game, and began to raid less, then just pvp, then logging on occasionally to play twinks. After a few months of no wow, I got an email telling me my billing would stop; something I had been meaning to do but hadn't gotten around to.

So I suppose I was a hardcore player, but I could never describe myself as an addict. At the time I thought I might have been, but I have never heard of a smoker getting bored of tobacco, or a drinker no longer finding an interest in alcohol.

What is odd is that I actually WANTED to play wow this whole time. I stopped soon after Cataclysm, and after hitting 85, it was just so boring. Everytime I tried to play, I couldn't be bothered. Maybe it was because I knew gearing up again would be for nothing. Either way I unwillingly ceased to play.
